I'm really enjoying the mix of reporting, asides and video clips.
"Channel4News - GOSSIP: The smart money sees the
government winning this one with the support of the Democratic Unionist
Party. But apparently the Tories are expecting to lose this too. We've
been told that David Cameron is at a private function from 6:30
onwards. That means that if the government loses the first vote, he
would miss the second vote, which we're expecting at 6:40. Clearly the Tories' aren't preparing for victory..."
The RSA organise some great talks, and they've uploaded three so far to RSA Vision. Although I've seen cameras at other sessions so I assume there are more to come. Is this a little TED? That would be v cool. Sadly you can't embed them, that would be even cooler. But here's some Clay to be going on with.
It's taken a while to get there, but at last you can now catch up on (almost) all C4 News online. So that means almost all of the 1hr long 7pm broadcast (we can't put it all on the web due to rights issues, unfortunately), and clips of key news items embedded into pages. And of course it's embeddable for full distributability (yes that's a real word).
Geekyoto is/was a conference set up by Ben Hammersley and Mark Simpkins to discuss "fixing the broken world". What followed was a day of talks from speakers across a range of subjects, and a interesting way to spend a Saturday. I'm sure it will be blogged in full elsewhere by bigger brains than mine. So I'll link that in at some point. In the meantime here are some links I'm following up from the day:
Moxio's usbcell batteries that charge up from your usb drive. Small simple idea to reduce the numbers of batteries fulling up the er.. landfill. Lots of discussion about designing for sustainability.
Amee, measuring the world's energy output. It's all about the data streams. In fact visualising data was a strong theme for the day - how to show impact/energy use/carbon footprint etc. The inference is that once we can see what's going on we're more likely to do something about it. I'm sure this will work to a point, but economic models and policies need to shift on a massive scale to achieve any real "world-saving" impact.
Installing swings in bus shelters. This was part of a bigger piece on playful spaces, lack of community contact etc. Hell, I'd just like a swing.
