I stumbled over Andrew Webb's completely charming collection of found photographs today, kind of like a mini-Flickr Commons. It turns out he'd blogged about them already, but I found the collection on Flickr. I idly flicked through them with half a mind on Andrew's request that "If you recognise a place (or a face!) in any of them, please at a note/geo-tag in Flickr."
And I have recognised somethings:
I think I spotted Portland Harbour. I used to dive there, the gap in the harbour wall looked familiar, I googled and... cue a little buzz of pride.
Flushed with Portland Harbour pride I decided The Duck is in Dorest. Digging through google reveals it's near Canterbury in a village called Pett Bottom (no sniggering) which is where according to Ian Fleming, James Bond had lived as a boy. Ding!
I like this game.
Some more flicking, some more Portland Harbour then...
Yarm. Seriously. Yarm is where I spent my teenage years. It's a tiny town in the North East that no one has ever heard of, and here on Andrew's found photoset is a pic of the church where my sister got married this last summer.
These are someone's personal photos which had been abandoned in a charity shop. Andrew put them online to look for clues, and also as a kind of social archive. This afternoon they started as an idle mooch online, then became a small detective game, which transformed into something that resonated much more personally. Just lovely.
Now I'm left wondering how to incorporate these lovely things into Lyddle End...
